What Is a Pain Reprocessing Coach?

A Pain Reprocessing Coach blends the roles of coach, pain educator, and consultant. Their primary goal is to help clients shift from a state of perceived danger to a sense of safety—both in relation to their pain and their environment.

Unlike traditional pain management approaches, pain reprocessing coaches help clients accurately reframe their pain sensations. When pain is generated by misfiring neural circuits rather than tissue damage, this reappraisal can turn down or even switch off unnecessary pain signals.

Pain Reprocessing Coaches help clients:

– Identify harmful patterns: Many chronic pain pathways are learned. Coaches teach clients to challenge and reinterpret these signals.

– Practice pain-reducing techniques: Using mindful, curious attention to pain sensations helps calm the nervous system and reduce fear responses.

– Build resilience and confidence: By teaching clients to view their bodies as fundamentally safe, coaches help them reclaim a sense of trust and control over their health.

Research Spotlight

A 2016 study published in Annals of Family Medicine explored how health coaches support clients with decision-making and behavior change. Seven key themes emerged, including trust, availability, shared values, and the coach’s role as a bridge between patients and providers.

The findings reinforce what we observe in pain reprocessing coaching: a strong coach-client relationship is the foundation for meaningful transformation.

Surgery, the Ultimate Placebo by Dr. Ian Harris
This eye-opening book is ideal for anyone considering surgery for chronic pain. Dr. Harris—a practicing orthopedic surgeon—reveals that many common procedures lack evidence from placebo-controlled trials and may be no more effective than standard care. A must-read for patients exploring alternatives to invasive treatments.

Why Consider Pain Reprocessing Coaching?

Clinical trials have shown that Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT) can lead to lasting reductions—or even complete resolution—of chronic pain, especially when the pain is driven by the brain’s interpretation rather than tissue injury. Coaching rooted in these principles offers a safe, science-backed pathway to healing.
